That being said I would select the Kawasaki over the Briggs. Reason being I think the Kaw. would be better is that I feel it is a more reliable engine in that size.

And as the Kawasaki parts prices consistently go up, aftermarket suppliers are doing their best to keep its costs down. On the other hand, Kohler engines are definitely more affordable than Kawasaki. However, if you compare it to Briggs’ prices, this engine may appear more expensive.

JMoe. I haven't seen a Briggs Vanguard series engine used on a lawn/garden tractor in years. The last I know of for sure was on some Cub 2000 series LT/GTs made up until 2004.
