For a 383 (3.75" stroke), you'd probably want to limit it to 6" for street. I use a 6" rod with a 3.80" stroke in my LT1 that does put the pin slightly into the oil ring land.InvestorPlace - Stock Market News, Stock Advice & Trading Tips If you’re looking for dividend stocks to buy to retire rich, I can help y... The longer rod gives more duration at tdc and yes you can run higher comp on them if I rember right. yes you have to use special pistons, it allows you to rev higher but I think if any thing it hurts torque. My machinest said more often than not people like the 5.7's more. I guess its up to your conditions though.

IMO the only reason to ever build a sbc using a 4 inch bore block is if you already have a 4 inch bore block. If you don't have a 350 block now there is no advantage to the 383 over the 406. Be careful of the lure of large displacement small blocks. It begins to get very pricey after you go beyond a 3.800 or 3.875 inch stroke, (415-421 cid).If you want to go fast then building a 377 is better than building a 355, which is better than building a 327, which is better than building a 302, which is better than building a 283. They took a garden variety 500 HP 383 SBC and started swapping intakes.you would have about 10.5:1 with a 350 but closer to 11.4:1 with a 383, theres 43.75 cubic inches of volume in a 350s cylinder and 47.8 cubic inches of volume in a 383s cylinder. it should be rather obvious that increasing the compression changes the fuel octane requirements. Most SBC's run very good with around 34-36* total ignition timing at WOT --- usually 20-22 degrees mechanical advance + base timing set at around 12-14*. If you have a very lumpy cam and want to smooth it out just weld up the slots so you get only 14-16* mechanical advance available - then set your base timing at 20* so you still have 34-36* at ...

The 427 cubic-inch big-block is an iconic engine. The big-block guys will say that the small-block weighs less, and therefore should have an advantage.
