Gold lets you revive from the very spot you died in to continue fighting. Yellow lets you revive at the last save the checkpoint. Pick the Gold option, DMC3 is quite hard and that should give you less of a headache if you reach a particularly rough section. Please for the love of Sparda choose gold.

If you want the extra challenge, then yeah playing the original PS2 release could be fun for sure, but otherwise the game on the whole is better in SE. DMC3 has a habit of corrupting the other saves (other than the one you most recently used) if you try to exit the game from the DMC HD collection screen. So for mine, Dante is slot #1 and Vergil is Slot #2.
