Players have been trying to make useful ones for almost as long, and 3.X has had many ways to build them. The Magus is just the first decent (imo) "gish in a can" class. Pathfinder doesn't have a Player's Handbook.

Like everyone says, magus is mostly melee damage with self buffs, those spell pen and ele focus feats are going to waste. Use self buffs, get 4 elements on your weapon (three with arcana), and grab Elemental Barrage. That's the basic way magus works right now. Str builds is more damage, while Dex builds can go into high AC tanks easier.
