If you have it off active party members divide it evenly meaning if you have less then 6 you get more. Shared Exp on. Ex: Everyone (including non active) gets 10 exp for the kill or skill check.

Harrim is fine but he's really more of a healer/support type who's less fragile than Tristian, who's a paper bag.
