It's not DNS related. So Verizon sends almost all traffic from Pittsburgh to a data center in Ashburn, VA. All the internet backbone providers connect to each other there. Verizon hands off the traffic to them to reach its final destination. Basically, something was wrong with that handoff on a lot of providers.
